First, what does RDL mean? Romanian Deadlift. Second, what is a Romanian deadlift? It is a deadlift variation that emphasizes a hip hinging movement with minimal knee bend that trains the posterior chain. It can be done with a barbell, dumbbells or in this case here with a trap bar.
Want more variation? Add some band reistance in. Not is it just another variation for the sake of variety but it is a variation that places more tension on the finish of the lift forcing you to accelerate through the top of the lift and really use those glutes. Take a look:
A one inch Super Band should do the trick as far as what band you should use.
One question that still hasn’t been answered is: why is it called a Romanian deadlift? Well according to legend some Romanian dude, Nicu Vlad, was witnessed doing this deadlift version by American weightlifters in the Olympic training hall prior to winning a medal. And from there the Romanian deadlift was born.
